Premise

Logo and mascot designs made for two separate online creators.

This case study is about how I work as a freelancer. Each section breaks down a stage, from the first reference through to the finished asset they put to work.

Jake'n'Bake

A logo for Matcha Mondays, a series on his channel. It runs as the graphic before a stream starts.

Starting

The process started with compiling reference photos of Jake. The requirements provided were the following:

  • Typography ("Matcha Mondays")
  • Matcha elements
  • Icon of Jake

As the ideating began, more context was needed. What kind of matcha guy is he? Does he usually drink out of a glass, a mug, a paper cup, with a straw? Small details like these are what tie the logo to him rather than to matcha in general.

A few character options went over for them to choose from, then we refined the one they picked until it looked like him.

The Lettering

I hand-lettered "Matcha Mondays" multiple different ways, experimenting with things like rounder letters and tighter spacing.

Putting It Together

Then I tried different arrangements of the type and the icon. This was the final layout we decided to move forward with.

Final

Line work cleaned up, and coloured.

IHeartJustice

A logo for his podcast, where he talks with his viewers.

Starting

I was provided a moodboard and a list of requirements to start working from.

  • Holding a mic
  • Gesturing to have a conversation
  • Typography ("IHeartJustice")
  • Flat colours, no gradients, no textures

From there I sketched various rough ideas for him to choose from. He picked the most welcoming one, with characteristics being a tilted head and holding out a mic towards the viewer.

Cleaner Sketches

After deciding on a composition, the next steps were to agree on stylistic choices. The client was satisfied with the hand-written text style, and voiced his preference for larger eyes. Below is the progression of stylistic choices of the icon.

Refining

I tightened the sketch into clean line work, then coloured it in his brand colors.

Final

Delivered in light and dark versions, to be suited for various background types.
